John went over the top at 05.20 due to a years worth of rain falling in the previous week the conditions were atrocious and many of the shells fired by the british failed to explode simply going down into the mud without exploding. As a result the German defences were still strong and the West Yorkshires who were to the left of the attack having assembled between Frezenberg and Potijze faced heavy resistance.
The regiment reached the Raveback stream which was shown as 5 feet wide on their maps to find it had swollen to 150 feet. It is not known where John lies what is known is that the advance by the WYR had stalled by 10.00 am.

Fred is shown in the CWGC record as the son of William and Zillah, husband of Mary Louisa of Scarthingwell Lodge Lancaster !
Scarthingwell Lodge is less than a mile from Barkston Village not Lancaster !
William was Fred's father, however the 1901 census shows Fred's mum as Susannah with a sister called Zillah born 1894.
His mum Susannah passed away with her baby Clifford aged 39 in 1903 whilst giving birth.
In the "Soldiers Died" database Freds surname is spelled Whittington! I cannot find Fred marrying a Mary Louisa
( maybe you can help? )
