Bilton and Bickerton are villages 7 miles North West of Tadcaster on the York to Wetherby Road
The WW1 Memorial dedicated in the grounds of St Helens Church Bilton is to the men who gave their lives from the villages of Bilton and Bickerton. This was unveiled on the 5th June 1920 by Colonel Jerome of Bilton Hall and dedicated by Reverend Canon Austin of York Minster.

CWGC The Cottage Pittern Hill Kineton Warwickshire. 1911 Census The Lodge Bilton Hall Occupation Groom his father was the Gardener. Enlisted Fulham Middlesex 02/09/1914 being 5ft 2/1/2 inches tall having Fair Hair and Grey Eyes. Landed in France 01/05/1915. Belongings sent home were a French Dictionary, Wallet, Letters and a Note Book.

Pvt Edgar Franklin, Rifle Brigade Bilton, Wetherby, has been killed in action, and a memorial service has been held in Bilton Church.

John was KIA whilst coming out of the front line between 08.30 and 09.30 hours with 6 other members of the 1st Royal Marine Battalion when a 5.9" shell fell amongst them. The 1914 Star was issued to his mother 15/09/1919.
