Barkston Ash War Memorial

Barkston Ash War Memorial is in the entrance to Holy Trinity Church.

 

Th evillage is 5.00 miles from Tadcaster on the A162 the old A1 which led to London.

 

The village is close to Saxton and children from that village used the school in Barkston Ash during WW1 the village at that time was known simply as Barkston.

​

Below can be found details of  both men remembered on the Barkston Ash WW1 Memorial and those who had a connection to the village either Born or Lived there at the time of the war.

1891: Born Towton nr Saxton 20th September Son of Charles Born Towton 1858 and Emma Webster Born Kippax 1860 Married 1880.

1891: Baptised 18th October Saxton.

1914-1916: Enlisted Pontefract

 

1921: CWGC: Residence Vine House Barkston Ash.

 

1928: Was incorrectly Remembered 2nd November as Bardsall T Z on the Arras War Memorial West Yorkshire Section Panel No 4. This was the case on the CWGC website until removed in 2015.

2006: Personally visited Thomas in France, unfortunatley the quality of his Grave Stone is not the best quality.

Private 2599110th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment KIA 12/10/1918 Aged 28.

 

1889: Born 7th October Towton Nr Saxton.

​

1889: Baptised 10th November Saxton.

​

1911: Residence Towton Occupation Farm Labourer/ Horseman. 

 

1916: Husband of Alice Oliver Married St Barnabos Heaton Bradford whilst Ernest was at Clipstone Camp Mansfield. Brother Charles Luke was a witness.

 

1919: Alice remarried to Robert Catchpole Darlington Residence on CWGC site No  13 Vernon Gardens Harrowgate Hill Darlington.

 

1918: Ernest was originally Laid to Rest alongside four others from the 10th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment at Map Reference 57B K13 h.9.9

​

BICKERDIKE Robert

Captain 6th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment KIA 20/11/1917 Aged 29. Award: Military Cross.

 

1888: Born Saxton Cum Scarthingwell Son of Thomas and Ann Elizabeth Weatherhill Married Tadcaster 1877.

​

1911: Robert was a student at the Roman Catholic Collage in Ushaw Durham.

​

1917: Awarded the Military Cross 16th August. (Details Below)

 

1917: Robert was at Havrincourt Wood the Regiment attacked at 01.45 he was possibly KIA in Trescault Trench where many of the leading attacking force lost their lives due to heavy a bombardment as they prepared to attack Havrincourt Village. 

​

1917: Robert left effects of £289 and 8 Shillings to his sister Teresa

​

Son of William Henry Born Goathland near Whitby and Louisa Mary Smith Born Slingsby nr Malton Married 1889 Slingsby. Enlisted Wakefield Hussars 19663. Landed France 04/08/1915. Residence 1911 Lucerne Cottages Newton Kyme Waggoner on a Farm. Probably DOW at Potijze Chateau which was used as an advanced dressing station.

Lance Corporal 3/26904 4th Bn South Wales Borderers DOW 07/09/1916 Aged 31. Born St Crux York. Son of Paul and Mary Ann Walker. Enlisted York Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry 21735. Living with parents 1911 Fox Inn Nether Poppleton Nr York Occupation Business Assitant in fathers pub. Husband of Florence Mary Nattriss brother John William remembered below Married Tadcaster 1915. Daughter Winifred A Born Tadcaster 1916. The CWGC states that Thomas and the other men at rest in Amara originally have had their own gravesite, but in the 1930's it was found salt was eroding the stone so the stones were removed and a memorial erected.

Enlisted Leeds.

Son of Joseph Born Ulleskelf 1864 and Annie Wilson Born Marske By The Sea 1864. Married Tadcaster September 1888 Vol 9c Page 985. Enlisted Inverness 31/08/1914 Aged 18 yrs 25 days old. Occupation Footman. Described as being 5ft 4 inch tall Grey Eyes with dark hair. Landed 03/01/1915. Gun Shot Wound to hand 28/07/1915.

CWGC Son of William and William and Zillah Cromack Married Tadcaster 1890 Died 1897. William remarried to Susannah Taylor Pontefract 1899. Susannah passed away with her baby Clifford in 1903 and was laid to rest 29/12/1903 Castleford All Saints. Husband of Mary Louisa Liddle Married Tadcaster 1912 Died 1957. Residence 1911 Lotherton Stables Aberford Domestic Groom. Enlisted Castleford.

LAWTON William Victor

Lieutenant 7th Pontoon Park Royal Engineers KIA 08/07/1918 Aged 26. Born Barkston Ash 03/12/1891. Son of Charles Henry John Victor Born York 1844 and Catherine Augusta Born Leeds 1854 Married 1877 in the Strand Area of the City of London. William was educated at St Peters Schoool in York, he was an Associate of the Surveyors Institute and the R.I.B.A. and was a keen sportsman playing for the Knaresborough Cricket Club and the Harrogate Old Boys Rugby Club. 

William joined the Queens Own Yorkshire Dragoons on the 17/09/1914 as a Trooper Service Number 3096, and served with the British Expeditionary Force from 20/07/1915. He recieved his commision and was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant on the 23rd of October 1915 and was promoted to Lieutenant in May 1916. William had an accident and was taken to No 3 Australian Casualty Clearing Station where he passed away he left £1072.00 in a will to his mother. 1911/  medal Card Castle Cliffe Knaresborough.
