BARNES Joseph

Lance Serjeant 1796 18th Queen Marys Own Royal Hussars DOW 2nd Battle Ypres 25/05/1915 Aged 26. Born Bolton Percy 1889. Son of Joseph Hill Born Appleton Roebuck and Elizabeth Wilson Born Swillington Married March 1874 Vol 9c Page 853. Enlisted York Landed Boulogne France 15/08/1914 an Old Contemptable Joseph was involved in the following Battles Retreat from Mons, Le Cateau, Marne 1914, Aisne 1914, La Bassée 1914, Messines 1914, Armentières 1914, Ypres 1914-15. 1911 In the Army 18th Hussars Aliwal Barracks South Tidworth Hampshire. Memorial Appleton Roebuck.

Joseph's Great Niece Alexandra Wood gives the following deatils: Joseph was an excellent horseman and performed at the Olympia Horse Show in front of Queen Mary where he sliced lemons/oranges (which were hanging from string/ribbons) with a sword whilst riding on horsback. He was due to go to Argentina after the war to train polo ponioes. He also recieved the 1914 Mons Star.

CUNDALL Henry Yates

Corporal 300885 16th Mountain Battery Royal Garrison Artillery KIA 31/10/1918 Aged 28. Born Tadcaster Enlisted Scarborough. Son of Joseph born Appleton Roebuck near York in 1849 and Mary Halley Wheatley Born Appleton Roebuck 1850 Died 27/01/1893. Joseph married again in December 1895 to Grace Isabel Cundall Born 1858 Acaster Malbis. Grace Died aged 87 on the 13/02/1945. Residence 1911 Sherburn Near Scarborough Occupation Auctioneers Clerk. Memorial Appleton Roebuck.

 

 

 

The family are buried in Tadcaster Cemetery and Henry is remembered on the gravestone, it gives details of Henrys final resting place in Palestine.
