ABERFORD WAR MEMORIAL

Aberford War Memorial

GARBUTT - WILSON

​

Aberford lies 6 miles from Tadcaster and 8 from Leeds. Parlington part of Aberford was home to the Gascoigne family who had a heavy influence on Tadcaster and its surrounding towns and villages at the beginning of the war.

​

Lord Gascoigne gave the land and the memorial was paid for by public subscription it was unveiled by Major General Landonon the on the 26th March 1922. The Memorial was designed by Sidney D Kitson and built by Thomas Waddington of Boston Spa It was reported that around 400 attended the dedication in stormy weather.

​

The Memorial itself is situated outside the village and remembers 24 men from the village who gave their lives.

​

A local newspaper report of September 16th 1914 stated that 22 men from Aberford had responded to the countries call; Those that gave their lives are in Bold:

1916: 03rd February references from Henry Atkinsons Carlton Hill Leeds stating he had worked as an apprentice Joiner at the works. And John Moverley Builder and Contractor of Tadcaster stated he had worked for a year in his employment.

 

1916: Landed France 11th August.

1916: Home on Leave 20th October to 26th October.

1917: Reported as Missing in action captured and held as prisoner of war, at one of the following camps, Gustrow, Minderheide, Munster, Parchin or Soltau. (All POWs laid to rest in Hamburg Cemetery had being held in one of the above camps.)

 

1918: Passed away from Dysentry contracted whilst a prisoner of War in Germany. Actually date of passing unknown confirmation was given on the 17th December.

The death is announced in action on Saturday last of Second Liuetenant William M Rhodes, the third son of Mr F Rhodes, manager of the Aberford Branch of Moon's Grocery establishment. Formerly a private in the RAMC, he was recently given a commission.

Sec-Liuet William M Rhodes, the third son of Mr F Rhodes, manager of the Aberford Branch of Moon's Grocery establishment, who was killed in action last Saturday morning, fell while leading a raiding party. He volunteered for the duty and was shot in the head whilst jumping on the enemy's parapet. Aged about 22 years, Lieut Rhodes was a clerk in the office of Mr William Bateson, Solicitor, Albion Street, Leeds. Until joining the RAMC as a private immediately the war broke. Only recently he was given a commission in the KOYLI's and came home from the front on a short leave a few months ago.

1915: Landed France 13th July.

 

1915: Thomas was known to be buried in the cemetery which was destroyed in 1916, afterwards only 25 bodies could be identified.  Thomas is commemorated in Grave Special Memorial J20.

There was a  William Jackson Born Sherburn in Elmet Living in Aberford in 1911 on Main Street Parlington husband of Francis Ellen however William was alive in the 1939 census living with Francis Ellen. Being described as being Incapacitated by accident.

1916: Landed France 15th June.

1916: reported below that Alvara was killed when a shell exploded at around 5.45 am in the trench and that Alvara was buried and killed.

​

1916: Alvara was originally buried in Bluff Cemetery 800 metres north of Authuille. I believe the following men died alongside Alvira.
